’Battle of the Sexes’ – Decorating for Both Him and Her

’Battle of the Sexes’ – Decorating for Both Him and Her

Back in the day, used to be that the backyard was ‘His’ domain, while the inside of the home was ‘Hers’.  In these modern times though, more and more, we’re seeing that when it comes to decorating the home, both partners are equally interested and vested in how they want it to look and feel.

Needless to say, it can become tricky when trying to decorate your home to be equally inviting to both partners.

Here are some simple tips to help cater to everyone’s needs:

  •  Choose neutral colours.  This creates a soothing base which will allow to layer both feminine and masculine elements to your space.
  • Introduce pattern and colour to suite both of you.  Adding large scale prints such as florals in soft colours to elements such as curtains, rugs, and toss pillows, will not draw too much attention to these accents.  Mix in some stripes to add a masculine touch.
  • Select furniture with both feminine and masculine lines; such as an ornate lamp or side table next to a straight and streamlined sofa.
  •  Create unique displays to show off the pieces that are important to each of you and highlites each of your personalities and design styles.
  •  Keep decorative pillows to a minimum, especially in the bedroom.  Most men agree that they don’t like a bed laden with pillows, only to have to remove them every night before bed.

Although it may seem like a daunting task, just keep working at it…practice makes perfect!  and remember that your home is supposed to be comfortable and welcoming to both of you, so make sure that you both have a say in what’s going into it.

Summer vacation colors

What says summer more than sunshine and fresh air? These summer hues will give your home that nice warm and vibrant update that you need to create a space that is fun, cozy and colourful.

Coral
Shades of pink don’t always have to be over powering in your home. Using the shade of coral your space can still be vibrant and timeless without making it too bright. By using contrasting colours for your furniture like brass, marble and even black and navy, your space can have a nice balance.

Marigold
Marigold is a type of yellow, and what says summer more then a nice sunny yellow day. Yellow can sometimes look too bright in a room, however by adding colours like green, white and even wood, you can make your space feel very earthy and beautiful. With this room you will feel like it’s summer everyday!

Indigo
Indigo is a great color to use in your living room space. Indigo is a classic colour that can make your space feel like a beach house summer home, and who doesn’t want that feeling in their room everyday. You can decorate indigo with some nice yellow and add some glass pieces in the room to make the space feel light and airy.

Living Easy

Summertime (when the living is easy) is a song that was written by George Gershwin.  As the title implies, the summer is a time for casual living and a lot of relaxation time. Summer is finally here and that’s great news for those of us who enjoy spending time in the great outdoors! Whether your prefer sports or leisure activities – here’s hoping the days unfold just the way you wish.

Some of the best summer days are spent getting together with friends, and family for fun, food, refreshments and relaxing conversation.

Here are three furniture items that say “Summer”

A lift top coffee table for eating in front of the television.  A place to serve finger foods and chips and drinks around the sofa for everyone to enjoy.

Cloud seating:  An unstructured sectional that is like sitting on a cloud, soft and plush!

Reclining chair : Throw up your feet and read a good book and relax.  Listen to music and put your drink on a tray.

Whether you are at the cottage or at home, I hope you enjoy the long awaited Summer :  My favorite season of the year!

Getting Your ‘ZZZ’ – Choosing the Right Mattress For Your Sleeping Needs

For the most part, when decorating our bedrooms, we are willing to spend thousands of dollars to purchase the perfect, beautiful bedroom furniture.  But when it comes to our mattress, we opt to shop around for the least expensive choices.  And why not? It’s not like anybody’s going to see it, right?  Well, they may not see it, but believe me, you’re definitely going to feel it!

Since we spend about one third of our lives in bed, skimping on our mattress is not an option.  When we don’t get enough sleep, our bodies are not given the opportunity to regenerate and recharge, which is important to our overall health and well-being.

What we don’t realize is that, over time, we can develop health issues if we don’t choose a mattress that provides proper support while we sleep.

Marshall Mattress understands what makes a good night sleep possible.

Marshall Mattress invented the Pocket Coil Spring Mattress and has been the leading authority in this mattress system for over 118 years.

They build high-quality mattress products without the use of gels or foam encasements and feature natural and man-made materials like New Zealand wool, soy foams, eucalyptus fibers and sustainable lumber in their mattress foundations.  Their mattresses are built like furniture; to last, but wear gradually over time.

Marshall Mattress understands that one type of mattress is not necessarily right for everyone and offers many different types and models to choose from; such as ‘Sleepmaker’, ‘Rest Assured’, and ‘Bespoke’ (to name a few).  Each includes 4 to 6 models offering something different in “personal feel”, but all have a complete Pocket Spring Coil interior and each are built to offer the best in comfort and support.

Here at Decorium we have a large selection of Marshall Mattress models on display, and invite you to come visit our showroom to try each of them out, to see which one will best suit your personal sleeping and comfort needs.

Take it from me, as a proud owner of my very own Marshall Mattress, I can honestly say that it’s such a pleasure to finally have a great night’s sleep and to wake up each morning feeling rested and refreshed!

With that being said, we want to make our homes bright and festive for the holidays.

Small changes in accessories and accent pieces can make a huge difference.

Freshen up the living room with a new rug and some colorful pieces of art.

Your kitchen will look brand new by adding fresh flowers and some accent jars with spices and baskets of new linen serviettes.

The family room is the room when we all get together and spent the most meaningful time that we will remember forever.

Add some new toss pillows on your sofa, new accent lamps and the room will come alive.

Decorating Your Entryway

When it comes to decorating your home, it’s important to not forget your entryway.

Stepping into your home should be a pleasant experience and should inspire you and your guests to walk through your door.

Here are a few tips on how to create a beautiful vignette for your entryway, that will greet your guests in style:

FLOORING:  A beautiful area rug placed inside the entrance of your door adds colour, texture, and warmth.

ARTWORK:  Add a bold print or painting to create interest to your walls.  This can also be a great introduction to the colour scheme used throughout the rest of your home.

MIRRORS:  Using mirrors can visually open up a narrow entryway as well as reflect light for a brighter space.

MULTIFUNCTIONAL FURNITURE:  Console tables can double as a place to display your favourite accessories such as books and photos, and can provide storage for small items such as keys and mail.

LIGHTING:  In addition to lighting your entryway, introducing a beautiful chandelier will definitely make a grand statement.

SEATING:  Carve out a spot for you and your guests to take off their shoes when entering your home by adding a bench or a chair near your front door.

So, whether you have a grand entryway or a small dark corner, think of your entryway as it’s own little room.  It’s the first area of your home your guests will see and it gives them a little taste of what’s to come…so go all out – here’s your chance to really make a statement and reflect your style and creativity!

Velvet

Wow, velvet ! It makes everything seem just a little more sumptuous. With its regal good looks and unsurpassed softness, its hard not to love it.

“Velvet “ is synonymous with “Special.”  A velvet jacket feels more luxurious than a polyester jacket. And a Red Velvet cupcake sounds more decedent than a chocolate cupcake.  “Velvety smooth” is a common expression to describe anything soft.

The material has been around for centuries.  While clearly its not a new fabric, in has become increasingly popular in the past few years.
Consider this posh fabric for your home for dining room chairs, an upholstered sofa, an upholstered headboard, or toss pillows as an accent on your couch.

Here are three reasons why you should choose Velvet:
1. Softness and luxury.  Velvet is one of those materials that you  buy because you want it, not because it’s practical.  Its a luxury fabric and looks and feels the part.

2. Light and volume.  Because Velvet has a nap, it shows the direction across the piece its covering.  It looks most welcoming on a tufted sofa.

3. Colour depth.  Velvet is dyed so the colours can be quite rich.  Add some punch to a plain sofa with a berry velvet pillow, or a hunter green pillow or perhaps one that is Dijon yellow.

Velvet is a touchy-feely fabric like none other.  If you want to add texture, colour and a rich look that is luxurious, try adding Velvet to your home decor.
