Accent Pieces

Accent Pieces

The best way to decorate a space that already has natural colors is by adding accent pieces and accent colors.

If you have a grey sofa in your space a great way to add some depth to your room is by adding accent pieces like; chairs, ottoman and pillows or any other accessory that you may need. By adding an accent color to your space, your room will have better contrast and will feel more balanced.

For example as shown above in this beautiful space, using dark blue pillows and matching the accent chairs to the color of your pillow will create a beautiful contrast to your space and will make the room feel larger and brighter.

It’s always great to play with color! As long as you can create a nice balance!

The Ultimate Showdown: Fabric Vs Leather

One of the most frequently asked questions I get from my clients when it comes to choosing a material for their sofa or sectionals, especially if they have pets and small children is, Fabric or Leather, which one should I get?

Now, there are valid arguments I can make for both options, but in the end what I always reply is that it’s a matter or their personal lifestyle, design preference, and budget.

When it comes to choosing between Fabric or Leather there are pros and cons for both.  Here are  few that can help you decide which one would be best for your home and your family:

  •  Maintenance:  Spills can be the nemesis of any sofa.  Leather can be slightly more forgiving.  However, regardless of your spill type, both should be treated the same way; soak it up ASAP.
  • Lifestyle: If you have pets, leather tends to be the better option, although it can get scratched easily.  But if you have children, especially if they enjoy using crayons or sharpies, fabric is a good choice because most fabric sofas come with cushions that are flippable.
  •  Comfort:  The feel of fabric sofas tend to be overall softer, warmer, and much more comfortable than leather; which can feel hot and sticky in summer and cold in winter.
  •  Colour and Pattern:  Although leather is now available is a variety of colours, they are still limited in texture.  Fabrics are virtually unlimited when it comes to colour, pattern, and texture.
  •  Hypoallergenic:  People suffering from allergies can often do better with leather versus fabric because it doesn’t harbour dust mites, pet dander, and other allergens.
  •  Cost:  It goes without saying that a sofa in a good quality leather will always cost more than in fabric.

Regardless of which you choose, there’s no fool proof way to protect your furniture.  The most important thing to keep in mind is to choose high quality materials.  The better the quality the longer your furniture will last.

Measurements

It is extremely important to have the correct measurements  when you are ordering the furniture.

Especially the bigger pieces, like sectional sofas and over sized couches.

The  entrance to the room is the first step in the right direction.

The double doors to the house usually  have no problem to carry the furniture through, it is when there is one door entrance the size of the piece is especially counts.

Then the configuration of the room itself.

Make sure you have the floor plan available for the placement of the set.

Smaller pieces in the bigger space will make the room bigger and vice versa.

How do you define comfort?

What do you think of when you hear the word “comfort”?

Do you think of a big sofa with a crazy throw blanket? Relaxing in a reclining chair after a long day?  Being with your family in the comfort of your home?  However you define it, we can all agree that comfort is a good thing; with positive feelings and a state of happiness always playing a part in it.  A universal idea of comfort is that it’s simply something that feels good whether it’s your favourite sweater, a pair of shoes, or a new piece of furniture.

Finding that Perfect piece

Sometimes comfort can be what you see. Maybe your living room is missing a coffee table or your sofa is missing decorative toss pillows.

It’s nice knowing there are countless ways to put a personal touch in every room. Your personal selection in fabrics, pillows and studs are what makes custom furnishings so great.

’Battle of the Sexes’ – Decorating for Both Him and Her

Back in the day, used to be that the backyard was ‘His’ domain, while the inside of the home was ‘Hers’.  In these modern times though, more and more, we’re seeing that when it comes to decorating the home, both partners are equally interested and vested in how they want it to look and feel.

Needless to say, it can become tricky when trying to decorate your home to be equally inviting to both partners.

Here are some simple tips to help cater to everyone’s needs:

  •  Choose neutral colours.  This creates a soothing base which will allow to layer both feminine and masculine elements to your space.
  • Introduce pattern and colour to suite both of you.  Adding large scale prints such as florals in soft colours to elements such as curtains, rugs, and toss pillows, will not draw too much attention to these accents.  Mix in some stripes to add a masculine touch.
  • Select furniture with both feminine and masculine lines; such as an ornate lamp or side table next to a straight and streamlined sofa.
  •  Create unique displays to show off the pieces that are important to each of you and highlites each of your personalities and design styles.
  •  Keep decorative pillows to a minimum, especially in the bedroom.  Most men agree that they don’t like a bed laden with pillows, only to have to remove them every night before bed.

Although it may seem like a daunting task, just keep working at it…practice makes perfect!  and remember that your home is supposed to be comfortable and welcoming to both of you, so make sure that you both have a say in what’s going into it.
